see ya calgary :(

hola

in a couple of hours i leave for the airport. going to argentina today! the big adventure begins. i AM excited about the trip... but right now i just don't feel it. i don't want to say goodbye to my gorgeous man. in fact, i'm so damn sad right now.

we had a wonderful weekend... went cross-country skiing in canmore on saturday and then to the calgary tower for dinner on saturday night. we even dressed up! it was such a fancy place - a revolving restaurant with an incredible view of the city lights. then yesterday we went shopping for toys for baby juan (ger's lil' nephew), and drove to a couple of parks for a look. the parks were a bit drab, recovering from their suffocation in the snow i guess, but i saw marmots for the first time!!! cute lil' things. we finished the weekend curled up on the couch with a dvd. perfect weekend. i don't want to go :(

as soon as i see ranga at the airport in buenos aires i'm sure i'll cheer up. this trip is gonna be so rad, i know. and yesterday i bought plane tickets back to calgary... so i'll be back soon... :)

nuestro departamento :)

hola :)

finally some pics of our (well, ger's really) apartment! it's still awaiting the red armchair and tv stand for the lounge and the den/office furniture, but apart from that it's really feeling like a little home :)

drumheller!

howdy!
i think winter has packed its bags and headed to the mountains!! i'm looking out the lounge windows and i can't see ANY snow (except for the tiniest patch way over on the hill). we had a stunning weekend and i even lasted about 3 minutes outside in a t-shirt. i could've lasted longer if i wasn't such a whimp. it really is relatively warm. being march (oh my god, is it really march already??) i don't think the snow's coming back until next winter.

we hired a car again in the weekend (it was nowhere near as rad as the last car which was probably a good thing coz we covered it in mud) and on saturday we travelled about 1 and a half hours east to the quirkiest little town called drumheller. drumheller's home to about 8000 people and hundreds of dinosaur bones. travelling from calgary across the plains the landscape gets increasingly barren until you hit a canyon. i have never seen a proper big canyon before, and so horseshoe canyon was as big a deal as i'm sure the grand one would be! according to the signs drumheller was 2 kms ahead but all we could see was dirt and rock all the way to the horizon - is drumheller an invisible town?!?! and then 2km further we suddenly clicked... drumheller is IN the canyon!!! woah! :)

this town is mental about dinosaurs, in fact it has the world's most impressive dinosaur museum (unfortunately though we ran out of time to see it), and there are many fibreglass dinosaurs loitering in the streets. the canyon and 'badlands' surrounding drumheller were once roamed by the beasts and their fossils and bones littered the area. dinosaur digs and discoveries still continue there. drumheller is the "capital" of the badlands area and the landscape is so different from the snowcovered mountains and forests we've encountered in banff and canmore. it felt like we were in an old wild west movie - dirt, rock, canyons and hoodoos. hoodoos are amazing! they are rather phallic rock formations caused by erosion from waterways that existed millions of years ago and are part of the stereotypical american desert image. we were really naughty and sat on top of one to eat our lunch (couldn't resist the view, the sun, and the atmosphere of the place even though i felt constant guilt over contributing to the accelerated erosion of that hoodoo).

instead of visiting the dinosaur museum we popped into 'reptile world' and oggled at hundreds of fascinating frogs, lizards, snakes and alligators. to my great disappointment ger was not impressed with the frogs at all and simply said that if one managed to escape from it's terrarium he would squish it underfoot without a thought. like an annoying bratty child he insisted on traumatising the poor little fellas by tapping his keys on the glass too. i'm convinced he just needs to be educated about the wonders of froggies though so haven't given up on him yet. on the other hand he was quite taken with the snakes and i could tell he was rather excited when the keeper asked us if we wanted to meet one up close. after he saw that britney the boa constrictor didn't eat me he decided to have a hold and was amazed to discover that snakes are not slimy! we had the whole place to ourselves too (apart from the keeper and the reptilians) which was great - no annoying heads and shoulders to peer over, and we had britney the boa all to ourselves.

drumheller is such a strange and interesting place (to visit, though wouldn't wanna live there) and i would recommend stopping by to anyone passing through the canyon! i put some pics up of course :)

wow, it really is a beautiful day. i'm gonna get off the computer, have some lunch and go get some sunshine.

be good :)

snowshoeing across the universe

hola! :)

i just finished a painting. it's not that good, but it's something i've been doing with my time so thought i'd stick it on the blog. you would think it's of the rockies, but nah, it's ruapehu.

i WILL stick some pics up of the apartment REAL soon... it is finally turning into a little home. we now have a couch (although it's a loaner from the shop while we wait for the real one), a coffee table, a tv and home theatre system, and a dining room suite! we went to ikea last sunday and went mental.

last weekend we hired a car you see, which makes furniture shopping completely painless! it was a really nice shiny car. a black one called a ford fusion. it was so intelligent - when we slowed down for the lights the cd player would automatically reduce volume, and then when we accelerated the cd player would get louder again! to compensate for engine noise! woah!

the main reason for hiring the car was so we could go for a one-day road-trip to banff for some hiking in the mountains. we decided to try snowshoeing! it's just like walking, but a little trickier. works those leg muscles real good. the scenery was stunning of course, but ger and i are really looking forward to seeing the mountains in summer. the snow seems to be getting a bit monotonous. we snowshoed for a couple of hours to get to the remnants of an old mining town called bankhead. there were some cool ruins there, i think it was abandoned in the 1950s because they mined all the coal. before having dinner and waving goodbye to banff we had a soak in the public hotspring. it was so scrumptious soaking in the soothing hot water while staring out at the towering mountains through the steam. pics of our day trip in banff are here: http://wedged.showcard.co.nz/gallery/album22

the weather is definately warming up. today it was 9 degrees and we had the blue-est sky, so much snow has melted. i was walking down the street without my jacket on! after meeting ger for sushi i went to prince island park for a stroll in the sunshine. i saw 4 squirrels :). i think i've timed leaving calgary quite badly. let's hope i can make it back here again in time for the last little rays of summer.

and now i'm babbling so nos vamos!

hope you're all happy and enjoying yourselves :)
big hugs,
me xx

our powder-puff view

howdy folks! :)

pics of the new apartment will come shortly but i just wanna wait for the couch to arrive (otherwise it looks like we're just squatting here). in the meantime, here is the view from our 10th floor apartment balcony.

and then click on the little movie thing! just a very short demo of our vista, and of how cold it is here (you can see it in the crazy argentinian's eyes)!
